Breathe

Allow
Your eyes
To flow a river
Of bitter, angry tears,
To cry,
And reveal your fears.

Resist
The urge
To hide them,
As you do often,
Don’t hold them in;
For once, just allow
Their abundant flow.

Breathe
Through your tears,
And through your fears;
Even if you’re alone,
The only one,
To live this bitter, gruesome piece;
Embrace it, all of it,
As only you can,
And through it all, just breathe.

Broken

The little girl surveyed the mess

Broken shards and litter,

Here, there and everywhere;

Looking up to me, she said

“You are worse than me,

That’s a right melee!”

And she was right –

For the things she’d held tight,

Close to her little heart,

I’d let go of, because it hurt

To carry them;

I’d meant to ease

The increasing burden,

Instead, they lay there, broken;

And so was her little self

As if she’d never mend.

Definitions

Tired –

It does not begin

To explain

What you feel

In your being

Without and within.

Alone –

A feeling

You’ve always known

Without having

To be told

What it means.

Distance –

A measure

Of the time and space

That exists

Between you and your treasure

A sense of belonging.

Numb

When water freezes

And loses its freedom

To gurgle over rocks,

Play hide and seek

With sunrays peeking through leaves,

Or to give a lift

To a friendly fish,

Does it mourn

The seeming downturn

Of things as they stand,

Or does it go numb,

And embrace the cold as it seeps

Through its very being,

Bowing in defeat,

And paying obeisance to the forces

That call the shots?

Escape

A fugitive

Evading justice

Sought shelter in a dark,

Cavernous cave;

He waited for nightfall

To make an escape,

But it brought no peace

To his hammering heart,

So he retreated further,

Into the pitch black of the nether,

Until he had gone so far

That it made more sense

To find his way to the other end;

And when he finally did,

He brought light

Into the darkest corner,

Now faintly lit,

But enough to reveal

The stories etched

On the wall faces,

The same, age-old stories

Of life and death,

And of the perennial phases

Of triumph and defeat,

For these one cannot escape

Even in the darkest cave.

Love

Love demands no answers,

Nor does it hold captive,

It certainly seeks no ransom,

To release a restless soul

Desparate to leave,

All of that is but deceit;

And if it is love you seek,

Look for it in the bright sky

On a starry night,

Hear it in the roar

Of a sandy sea shore,

Soak it in, in the dense

Of a rainforest;

A love that will endure

Every test,

Is birthed best

In the heart of nature,

Where love shines pure.

What use?

I

One fine day,

To her dismay,

She found that she was

Missing her shoe,

No, not the pair –

Just the one that would

Ensconce her left foot.

She did what she could,

What you normally would,

When such a thing happens;

She looked for it,

In the most obscure

And random spots

To be doubly sure,

While she held on to the other

In the broken pair.

She held on

For so long,

That it lost

Whatever allure

It orginally held,

And gathered dust

Besides a stale smell,

But she held on,

Or perchance it was

That she forgot.

For, what use a lonesome shoe?

II

What use staying true

To oneself

In a vicious world,

A world that can inflict a sting

So painful, it’d hurt to rise,

From the quagmire of lies

And the burden of being

The lone wolf?

Shine

Sunshine, is welcome

But sometimes not,

When it gets too hot

For human comfort.

This fiery star

Heeds no one,

Choosing at times, to disappear

When we’d rather it not.

The sun shines,

And nature responds,

So too, the usually invincible human;

Our rythms and routines

Circadian or mundane,

Are set to follow

The powerful sun.

Sun shines,

Man cannot but abide

By this simple fact;

Man cannot control

What he cannot.

Every creature bidden

To stay hidden,

To escape man’s wrath,

Is but one ray away

From holding sway

And shining with power,

No longer seeking cover;

For it’s man who must,

As he would just

Seek the shade,

When the sun shines.

Dark comforts

The day the sun forgets to set

And the street lights fail to turn on,

The glow worms will be dulled

And the cicadas stilled,

While tired birds will circle

The sky, in confused whirls;

That day, light will have victory,

Vanquishing darkness

Which will have won

Even in defeat

As it beats its retreat,

Quiet, yet emphatic,

Taking with it

Quietude,

Respite, and solitude;

And the light that shines best,

When cocooned in the nest

Of cosy darkness –

Candle light,

Glow worms and star light,

And so too, street lamps,

And the headlights

From every vehicle on a sojourn,

Bearing weary souls

Returning home.

Some day

Some day

Her smile will touch her eyes,

Which will twinkle

With the joy of life.

Some day

She’ll pack up her fears,

And drown them with her tears,

Deep in the ocean,

To the point of no return.

Some day

She’ll regain

The skip in her step,

And she’ll once again

Want to be heard, and to be seen.

Some day

She’ll want to wake up,

To sieze the day,

To have her say,

And to forge her way

Out of the darkness and the pain.
