Strong

Strong.
It was the heavy lock
That secured your home
When you were four.

Some years later
You found it in
The steel cabinet
Where you stored
Your clothes
But more so
Important things.

It was also
How your father
Managed to carry
In both hands
Heavy suitcases
Amidst milling crowds
On a busy railway platform.

Strong.
You found it
In different things
And people
As you went along.

It was the chink
In your armour
That gave way
To the weakness
Which hangs
Like a dark storm cloud
And engulfs your strong.

Tumult

This expanse
Stretches forth,
Seemingly
Unto infinity;
At once intimidating,
As it is welcoming,
To the embattled soul
That stands at the shore,
Watching the waves,
Beating against it,
Relentlessly.

Almost akin,
To the pangs
Of unceasing pain,
That rise in the depths
Of her belly.

Silent turmoil

Silence begets not
Any semblance of peace; when
The mind’s a whirlpool.

Revelation

Somewhere in the past
A distant one
She chose to don
A veil of darkness
Hoping to hide
Behind its opaqueness
All her secrets
Vile, shameful, and dark.

She held it tight
Around her
As she walked,
And even as she lay
On her bed
On the darkest night,
Until her secrets
Were lost,
Not just to the world,
But to her as well.

Secrets have a way
Of tumbling out,
Like the skeleton
In the proverbial closet;
Perchance it was
A gust of wind,
Or even that
She had a lapse
In her attention
To detail,
And she let it slip,
Ever so slightly,
And it began to show,
The shame – the utter shame,
That hid beneath.

She tried hard
To grab
At the flying garb,
To hold it around her,
Wrapped tight.

But that which had
Been once revealed,
Could no longer be unseen.

So there she stood,
As alone, as she ever had been,
No garb to hide behind,
Exposed, her hair flying wild,
All over her head,
Lowered to the ground.

Monsters

This room appears changed
The bedspread, curtains and paint –
It looks good as new.

I feel a bit scared
To step within, what if they
Haven’t disappeared?

Mum said dad has fixed
All the monsters ‘neath my bed
They’re on vacation.

I wish he had them
Locked up instead – throw away
The key – wishes have wings.

What if they lie in
Wait, for the night ? And then come
Rushing in? Scary!

“No monsters exist”
They said, but fixed my room too.
I think they’re afraid.

The monsters can hide
In all sorts of places – and
I think my heart’s one.

Circle of life

Little bird, d’you know?
You are red, green and yellow,
Crown of the meadow.

When you look into
The blue skies, do you feel free?
Hunger lords o’er you.

Big bird, spotted grey,
As forceful as this hot day,
Is your loud ruckus.

When you look into
A still lake, do you see you?
Or your frightened prey?

Birds – both of you, not
Quite the same though – of unlike
Feather; yet alike.

The squiggly lil worm,
The fish and the spawn – they’re all
Born to serve you – not!

You may think that’s so,
But no – they were born, like you,
To complete the chain.

This circle of life,
Holds us all in its tight fold,
All for one and all.

Warrior

The tree on the ledge,
At risk of falling over,
As the ground gives in.

From firmly rooted,
To being on edge – the tree,
Has lived through it all.

The tree grows new roots,
To clutch at the underside –
To counter the fall.

Humans, wont to think
Plants aren’t beings – the tree,
Shows them otherwise.

Attuned to wind, soil,
And water – it knows its place
Just right – warrior.

Light up

You’ve wandered into
This realm – unable to leave,
Fettered by darkness.

The light that you seek
Exists – but the space you seek
To light up, is huge.

Look around you, to
Find things to burn – destruction
Can brighten this realm.

Paradoxical –
And yet, it’s only fire that
Can douse this darkness.

Pick up the old yarns
And cast them into the fire –
Watch the realm light up.

“Sorry, not sorry”

When you walked out
You made a choice – and it hurt,
But say no sorry.

An apology
Is not a peace offering,
Nor a free guilt pass.

An apology
Is sans boundaries – or else,
It ceases to exist.

What they did though, it
Hurt even more – and no, I
Can’t make them confess.

I will not demand
An apology from them,
For your peace of mind.

An apology
Is not a cure for deep pain,
It’s a salve, if that.

An apology
Cannot be forced – it must flow,
From a place of love.

Befuddlement

New these beginnings,
Timeless these evergreen fears –
Paradoxical.

What is that flicker?
Is it the start or the end –
A spark or ember?
